Assembly Edward Hennessey Calls on NYS to Build Roads Safer Now; Pass Bill to Strengthen Hit and Run Penalties

It is time to complete our streets and strengthen penalties.”

WHAT:  Press conference a) to call on NYS DOT to invest in Suffolk roads, make them a priority for complete streets projects to protect vulnerable users. b) to address urgent need to strengthen hit-and-run penalties.

WHEN:  Saturday, March 8, 11:00 am.

WHERE: North Patchogue, Long Island, Intersection of North Ocean Avenue (CR 83) and Shaber Rd (north east corner).

Directions:  LIE to exit 63; exit to North Ocean Ave. Go south on North Ocean. Look for Shaber Rd. after crossing over Woodside Avenue. Intersection/corner will be on your right. Sunrise Highway to North Ocean Avenue Exit. Go north on North Ocean Avenue. Shaber Rd. intersection/corner will be on your left.

INFO: Assemblyman Edward Hennessey who sponsored the texting while driving bill and who is on the transportation committee has been a strong proponent of funding roadway and traffic improvements that implement complete streets design to empower and enhance communities. NYS passed a Complete Streets policy August 15, 2011.

Assemblyman Hennessey has also sponsored A7315 which seeks to significantly strengthen penalties for hit and run drivers. Both A7315 and funding complete streets projects make up a several-part approach to build our roadways smarter, make them safer for vulnerable users (pedestrians, bicyclists, runners, mass transportation riders) as well as for motorists of all ages and abilities and to deter those motorists who would hit a vulnerable user (pedestrian, runner, bicyclist) or other motorist and flee the scene rather than call for aid.
