Planning a Ride

    Planning a Ride

    1.  Plan - To plan a ride include a Date, Time, Location, Status ( , delayed, changed, cancelled), Distance, Level (class), Terrain, Group (structured or paceline), Type (Road, Mountain, etc.) and a General Ride Description. SBRA has the right to edit or remove a post if there is any inappropriate information not pertaining to the ride description.

    2.  Post - Post your ride, including all of the above data, to the SBRA website via the Ride Calendar or Lead a Ride web pages.  Keep the Ride Calendar up to date by posting any changes to your ride data to the SBRA website. SBRA rides are to be held in Suffolk or Nassau counties. Rides outside Suffolk and Nassau counties can be posted to the ride calendar if they are accessible to SBRA members and within a distance that can be completed that day (travel and ride). NON-SBRA special event group ride interests should be posted on the Forum under "Information about non SBRA Events" or "SBRA Off Long Island Trip Planning."

    3.  Credit - You are responsible for your ride once you have posted it.  Ride Leader credit is given to the individual who post the ride (with 24 hour notice) or their designated substitute.  You should recruit a substitute Ride Leader if you are unable to lead in the ride. Rides related to special events offered by other organizations held within or outside Suffolk / Nassau counties do not qualify for ride leader credit. Road rides less than 10 miles will be subject to review for credit or partial credit.

    4.  Cue Sheets/GPS Routes - Cue Sheets are strongly suggested on all structured rides and GPS Routes recommended for all paceline rides.  You can include the link for the ride in the body of your ride description.  If using cue sheets, make sufficient copies of the cue sheet for the number of expected riders.  Leave copies on the windshield of your car to accommodate late arrivals.  It is suggested that you carry a smart phone or bike computer with map capability or a map for backup should you plan to ride in unfamiliar territory.

    5.  Route - Study the route in advance to familiarize yourself with it.  Google Earth is a great reference source if you were unable to scout the route.

    6.  Equipment - Have a cell phone or smart phone available on the ride to be used in the event that an emergency situation arises.  Carry a pen/pencil & paper in the event of an accident, so you may record important details.  You should also have a blank copy of the official Incident Report Form available on the SBRA website (left column) under Rides.

    7.  Go / No-Go - Rides should take place as published unless weather conditions warrant changes.  If conditions are uncertain, show up at the ride start and decide from there.  Any changes should be published to the website ASAP.  Smart phones come in handy for these edits. If you are certain the ride will not take place due to weather, change the status to Canceled on the Ride Calendar.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All Ride Leaders must adhere to the SBRA Ride Leader Guidelines. Failure to adhere to the Ride Leader Guidelines will be cause for termination of their Ride Leader status. If a Ride Leader is found to have a misunderstanding or deliberate disregard to any aspect of the Ride Leader Guidelines they will be informed of these findings and requested to correct their actions on all future rides. Should a Ride Leader fail to correct their actions after two requests, their Ride Leader status may be terminated.
