I think it’s time to start backing down on the distance, and next week just do some short distances with less mileage, taking a few days off before the century giving those leg muscles a chance to rest. All of us have put in the work, training on the flats, and the hills. Just think how easy this is going to be; a 100 mile flat ride. I know we can all do this, and finish; be proud of what you've accomplished to date, you worked hard for it!!
This is the last of the Seagull Century training rides which will be the same as ride number 7. You Do Not have to be doing the century to go on any of these rides. The ride will be about 66 miles. Today’s route will be taking us to Eastport, Remsenburg, Westhampton Beach, and points east to the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Dune Road will be part of the eastbound route. If the wind is in the wrong direction we’ll take the inland route for the comfort off all; perhaps returning via Dune road. While on this 10 mile stretch of road a paceline can be started for those who wish. The average pace for this ride will be between 14.9 & 15.4 mph (you’ve done it before) +/-, depending on the wind, and other factors which could change the average. The road speed will be 15-17.5 mph to produce the average. Yes, we will be doing that hill on Montauk highway again. I’m just giving you a heads up; so it won’t be a surprise this week.
The plan is this - Around mile 22 or so there will be a pee stop. At mile 31 we'll stop at Tully’s for clam chowder, clams or whatever. If we get to Tully’s too early we'll double back after the golf course, making sure we get that chowder: baring no floods on Dune Road. You can always save you appetite for the next stop which is the Beach Bakery around mile 59. Be sure you bring water and something with electrolytes in it.
Give the ride some thought and come out with your fellow riders and have some fun! Once again our resident baker LYNN will be making something yummy from her bake shop; making the entire ride worth it! Other supplies after the ride; working on it.
Please check the ride calendar for any weather, or last minute cancellations which will be posted no later than 6:30AM if necessary. My cell number is 631.484.3490; call anytime if you have questions about this ride.
