As of Thursday morning, June 9th, there are 42 riders pre-registered for the
Town of Riverhead Youth Bureau’s “Healthy Riders - Healthy Riverhead” Ride
(Sunday, June 12, 2011; rain date Saturday, June 18th)
We presently have 9 SBRA Volunteers to Marshal this ride, but could use 5 or 6 more.
The Town of Riverhead Youth Bureau has been hosting a Family Bike Day (which included a children’s Bike Rodeo) since 1983. A couple of years ago they expanded their activities to include a “Family Ride” and SBRA has been assisting with Ride Marshals, along with Riverhead Town Police on bicycles and driving in vehicles. This year the Youth Bureau’s ride is being run on a different day than the Family Bike Day events and will include three distances – 5 miles, 15 miles, and 30 miles - and SBRA has once again been asked to provide assistance on the rides. The police will also be participating, both on bicycles and in vehicles, to ensure the safety of the ride. Increased participation is expected for these rides this year.
The ride is being held on Sunday, June 12th and is scheduled to leave the Peconic Riverfront as follows: 30 mile - 9:00 AM; 15 mile - 9:30 am; 5 mile - 10:00 am. Although there is pre-registration for the event, there is also day-of registration at 8:30 am. As such, it is unknown how many people will show up for the ride, so we are estimating that a total of 10-16 volunteers will be needed to ride as Marshals. It is also unknown how many people will be riding in each of the distances, so Marshals will be assigned to each ride as is necessary. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who is thinking of becoming a ride leader to get some “hands on” experience escorting a ride.
All SBRA members who participate in this event as Marshals will receive Volunteer Credit.
There is also a lunch provided by Atlantis Marine World at the end of the ride.
