NOTE:
Under the Ride Level details, the "Type: Road Bike" refers to the ride will be on paved roads (rather then off road trails). Although a Road Bike is suggested for Road Bike Type rides it is not required. Hybrid and mountain bikes can be used on these rides as well provided you are comfortable with the pace outline in the Posted Ride. This ride calendar is for club rides, club meetings, club event posts and shop rides only.
For Other Events in our area and off Long Island check out the "Other Rides & Events calendar" and the "Forums"
To go more quickly back or forward "several" months click the "Year" link here or at the top of page.
We'll start off the New Year with a ride to Bean & Bagel (I love this route). Next time, we'll try the bakery from Maples. This is a moderate C+/B- ride. If its very windy, the pace will be slower and we could shorten the milles. Any changes by 8am.
TIME CHANGE TO 9:45. Probably Will Not Go To Ronkonkoma
Note: If the wind is from the NW the ride will be changed to “Around Holbrook” this will eliminate Ronkonkoma; leaving us with a flatter route.
The ride will take us around the Holbrook area, and then up to Ronkonkoma before turning around, heading south back to Holbrook. At the end of the ride we can all go for coffee and a bagel and chat as usual, if you want. The average pace for this ride will be between 14.5 & 15.0 mph; +/-....naturally the road speed will be higher to produce the average.
Any cancellation due to weather or any other circumstance will be posted no later than 8:00am if necessary. If you have question about the ride or the start location please call or text me 631.484.3490…
This will be a low average B- ride. This ride is just to get out there and spin the legs for an easy ride. Please check the morning of the ride for any changes in case the weather changes. All riders are welcome but everyone needs to respect the posted pace.
(I originally posted this for Sat the 29th but had to change. I forgot about an appointment i made.)
Let's start the New Year off with this ride around Holbrook, Ronkonkoma, and Bohemia, then down to Sayville and back up to Holbrook and the ride start. We will take our break at the Gourmet Bagel Co. on Lakeland Ave., where beverages, food, and a bathroom are available. I will adjust the route direction for the most favorable winds.
This will be a C+ ride which will average 12.1 - 12.6 and there will be cue sheets.
Kick off the New Year right with a hangover recovery ride. Easy ride out to Patchogue. Late start so people can recover following New Years Eve celebration parties. No one gets dropped - we ride as a group.
Start the new year off right, with the first Thunderbird ride of the year, on a New Year's Day, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrcBeCU9TGw . We'll be heading to Smith Point, to have a look at the beach..
This will be an easy paceline ride, to go out for a spin and enjoy the nice weather; and to get rid of those New Year's Eve toxins! Everyone stays together at a sane pace, except for the run down to the beach on William Floyd.
So get up, get the lampshade off your head, drink some fluids, take some aspirin and get on your bike!
Rest Stop at Briermere, no one left behind, cell 631-484-1650 please call after 7am or before 7pm for any questions, please check back 2 hours before ride if weather is questionable, have a great day.
I plan on doing the entire trail again ... Intermediate/Begineer riders should consider coming along as the BDs come off the main trail which is do-able by begineers.
Check back to this posting before leaving for the ride as Life Happens and Things Change.
Running late? PULL OVER and call my cell below ... we'll wait but make you feel lousy about it ...
No need to arrive 20 minutes early and get sweated in the car or freeze outside .... just be there in time to start at the posted Start Time.
We will be riding from Veteran's Park in Calverton to McDonald's in Manorville, some of the miles will be on the Grumman Trail. For info: contact Bill G. at 631-356-3036. Strong winds can lower our average pace. Check the ride calendar the day of the ride for changes, which would be posted by 08:00am day of ride.
We will be leaving Bank of America and head to Great River and East Islip for a 20 mile ride. The ride will be at a B- pace with an average speed of around 14.5 to 15mph and road speeds that will reach 16 to 18mph.
Changes or cancelation will be posted by 12:30pm day of ride.
If you have any questions concerning this ride, call Mike at 516 448-8545.
Leaving from the Maples parking lot, we will meander up to Bean and Bagel, with some mileage on the Grumman Trail. For info: contact Bill G. at 631-356-3036. Check the ride calendar the day of the ride for changes, which would be posted by 08:00am.
All members are welcome. New members are encouraged to attend. Light food and refreshments will be served (PIZZA for this meeting!).
GUEST SPEAKER: Chris Joinnides from Kreb Cycle will be coming down to talk about how to take care of your bike during the cold weather season and between tune-ups. He will also show us how to change a flat tire (the right way ) so bring a wheel (and your tools) with you for some hands on learning.
Most likely we'll ride North from the Reid Recreational Center. Anyone interested in doing the south trail only should show up at 9 so we can coordinate any after ride activity.
If the north route is too wet then I'll go certainly go south and this time cross Rt 25 for a ride on the Yellow trail headng east for a bit.
Check back to this posting before leaving for the ride as Life Happens and Things Change.

This is the long-running Kreb Shop "A" Ride. ***In light of the rainy forecast for Saturday, we'll be riding the extended 40 mile East route from Kreb this week.***
Please park your car in the Bellport Municipal Parking Lot located at Bellport Lane & Bell Street, and then ride bike half a block over to the Kreb Bike Shop parking lot at 10 Bell Street, to sign-in for ride and hear the pre-ride briefing.
We do scheduled wait-ups (and as necessary), in addition to one brief rest stop halfway through ride. Please bring adequate drinks and nutrition, as the rest stop occurs in a parking lot (no food/drinks/restrooms available).
DRESS WARMLY, it's gonna be chilly on Friday. Please text me with any questions (516) 818-7855.
We're off to the Bean & Bagel. I have a few new twists and turns to the route. It's still a moderate C+/B- pace. Maybe we can add an extra loop at the end. Any changes by 8:00am.
Today's Mi Tierrita ride will be going to Wertheim. We will take a break there; bring a snack if you want. The route is mostly flat with a small incline here and there. The route on the way back may change depending on the wind. Perhaps if the temps and the wind work out we might add a mile or two
The average pace for the ride will be between 14.5 to 15.0 mph, depending on the roads and wind direction. The road speed will be between 15 and 16.5 mph.
Do you know what AGUAPANELA is? Come and find out; PARKING: Use the area of the parking lot on the SOUTH side first.
Please check the ride calendar for any weather, or last minute cancellations which will be posted no later than 8:00 am if necessary. My cell number is 631.484.3490; call or text anytime if you have questions about the ride or need directions to the start...
Join me for this C+ ride around parts of Stony Brook and St. James, on some newly paved roads. The pace will be 12.2 - 12.7, and there will be cue sheets.
Due to rain on Saturday the Venue AND Date/Time of this ride has been changed to Calverton at 8:30 AM. Sorry for the earlier time which is due to a prior committment.

--------------------------Original Post --------------------------------------------------------
Watch the weather and check back to this posting as this may be a rain out.
Doing ES on the w/e makes for less commuter traffic. I plan on doing the Advance trail ... BUT if an Intermediate rider shows we'll determine the route by condition of the trail up to the trail split on the west side of the fire road. If we do the Intermediate trail than we'll add Hell Hill to keep the more advanced riders honest.
51 miles with a few longer hills. As the season goes on we will be adding a few more hills to this ride. Because of the hills the group will have a few meet ups. I will give you the meet up points at the begining of the ride. One brief stop at mile 29.
Please become familiar with the route especially if you are out front.
We'll be starting at the West Islip Stop and Shop going to the Great River deli, we'lll be parked in front of the liquor store on the East side corner of the lot. We may do a loop in the park which will add an additional two or three miles to the ride. So air up your tires and layer up for a nice Sunday morning spin.
Join the Thunderbirds on a Friendly easy paceline ride, from the South St. School out to the bagel shop in Riverhead. Everyone will keep an even pace and not hijack the ride, as many of us have to work on Monday!
The weatherman says we'll have some blue skies, after rainout Saturday, so let's get out and ride! Mr. Blue Sky will be there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxCtq4fzqUo (You finally can understand the words at the end).
Sun 7:45 – Due to the winds and the direction the route will change as we go. Mileage will come in between 25 and 28. I have a route in mind
NOTE: If it is too windy the route and the distance will be shortened to make the ride easier. The start time and the ride start location will remain the same.
This morning it might be nice to take a ride through Bellport and Patchogue stopping for a break at Mickey D’s around mile 20. The average pace will be between 14.5 to 15.0 mph depending on the roads, wind direction, dew point, and other conditions. Naturally, the road speed will be higher (15 -16.5 mph.) to produce the average. Depending on the wind and the route back we might be +/- a mile.
Good Stuff after the Ride. Not sure what good stuff; it's always a surprise.
Please check the ride calendar for any weather, or last minute cancellations which will be posted no later than 8:00am if necessary. My cell phone number is 631-484-3490; call or text anytime if you have questions about this ride.
Join me for this C+ ride from Sayville - destination will be determined by the prevailing winds. We will have a bathroom stop and take a break somewhere.
This is a structured ride which will average 12.2 - 12.6, depending on wind, riders, etc. There will be cue sheets and no one will be dropped.
NOTE: Park on the South Side of the train station, across the street.
Lets meet up for a trail ride at a moderate pace. We will do main trail and group can decide on a few diamonds to add on. I would rate this an advanced beginner level ride. Bring water and snacks. Bring & display your DEC permit. Rain cancels so check back by 9 am if rain is in the forecast and for any other possible cancellation. Call me with any questions. 631-806-9662
Ok, so I found out the Wertheim Refuge is not open on Sundays! (and is also affected by the government shut down!) So we will be doing a Moriches Meander instead- park in the lot by Wendy's and we'll do 15-18 miles on mostly side roads. So the start location has changed (not Bellport but now Moriches). (time and distance the same). Bring a snack for our brief stop.
Park in the lot across from Kreb Cycle. I plan to go to Wertheim Refuge (not the beach) so I'm not exactly sure on the mileage. We may also add a few side roads after Wertheim but total would be no more than 20. Bring a snack for our stop.
Join me for this ride around Calverton and Manorville. If it is windy today, this route will keep us on many roads that are not out in the open. A big portion of the ride will also include the bike path and the new extension back to the parking lot, which all should be protected from the wind.
The ride will average 12.3 - 12.9, with cue sheets.
WIND CHILL AT RIDE START 19 DEGREES (STANDING STILL)
Winter pace out to Manorville for a quick and traditional McDonalds stop. This is about getting out, and putting some base miles in. If you rode hard on Sunday, this could be a recovery ride. We will stay togeter as a group.
Ride Canceled - There is still light rian in the area roads will still be wet at ride time. However, tacos are still a go at 5PM.
Trail is closed due to SHOTGUN hunting season. With high winds predicted for Wednesday it doesn't pay to change the ride location. Sorry. The new Grumman Trail is completed and makes a complete loop from the Veteran's Park parking lot and back in about 9.5 miles. We will complete the first loop and return to where our cars are parked. At this point feel free to return home, or continue on for another loop. About 3 miles into the second loop we will stop at Bean and Bagel for a snack and bathrooms. We will than continue on to complete the second loop. This ride is traffic free, except for the crossing of route 25 to and from Bean and Bagel. The deep Fall debris on the Grumman trail has been cleaned up, and just a small bit of Fall debris remains on the trail. For info: contact Bill Gravitz at 631-356-3036. Check the ride calendar for changes, which will be posted by 08:00am day of ride.
40 miles with 2200 feet of climbing. We do a few hills twice and they are the longer hills. Plan on keeping group together so we will have wait ups and a staedy pace. No planned stops so bring what you need to eat.
Download the route or become familiar with it ecpecially for the stronger hill riders.
Ride moved to Thursday ... Sorry if it messed up your plans.
Time for the Rock Garden + I plan to do most of the other BDs including the Wild Turkey berm + the new section of #6. Though Overton itself is really enough ... depending on a group decision maybe we'll cross Rt 112 and JUST do Dark Side of the Moon (DSoM) and Eclipse.
Overton has a number of diamonds that are do-able by Intermediate riders ... Got 6 Minutes, BD #1, #2 and #5. There are waitups and the BD's always loop back to the Blue main.
Let's hope the trail is quiet (no metal crushing or fertilizer grinding ;-) .
Check back to this posting before leaving for the ride as Life Happens and Things Change.
Running late? PULL OVER and call my cell below ... we'll wait but make you feel lousy about it ...
Wed Night – 9:45pm - Predicted temps for Thursday are around 32 with winds 20-24. The ride is CANCELLED. It's just too cold and windy for me.
NOTE: Should it be too cold, or too windy the ride will be canceled, moved, shortened, or changed. Please make sure you check the START LOCATION if any changes are made. If a change is made it will be done prior to 8am day of ride...
Today's Mi Tierrita ride will be going to Wertheim or a little further. The route is mostly flat with a small incline here and there, and of course the Woodside (maybe) bigger incline. The route on the way back may change depending on the wind.
The average pace for the ride will be between 14.0 to 15.0 mph, depending on the roads and wind direction. The road speed will be between 15 and 16.5 mph. Don’t forget to bring a snack for the stop along the way.
Do you know what AGUAPANELA is? Come and find out; PARKING: Use the area of the parking lot on the SOUTH side first
Please check the ride calendar for any weather, or last minute cancellations which will be posted no later than 8:00 am if necessary. My cell number is 631.484.3490; call or text anytime if you have questions about the ride or need directions to the start...
Average speed mid 15 to low 16 depending on wind. Expected to be a cold and windy day so I changed up and shortened the route. Here is the tentative route which can still be modified if necessary. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28940515
Plan on doing THE WALL! First try this year for me and would be a first if I can do it ;-). ... The WALL is technically challenging but not as scary as Mogul 3 (which we'll leave for next time). We'll skip Mogul 2 to help keep the energy up for the The WALL and if we still have strength we'll do the easier section of Hell Hill as well as Monster Mash.
Doing ES on the w/e makes for less commuter traffic.
Well all right, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cDGADWr__o , let's see how many hardy souls are out there! The Thunderbirds will head out to Riverhead for a quick bagel / rest stop, with a different route than last week! Grumman and Route 24 on the outbound loop, and Deep Hole on the way back.
Due to the cool temperatures predicted, we'll make a very short stop at the mid-point - so we don't cool-off! Depending on conditions, we may cut back the distance...
Ride leaves at 11 (we roll at 11). Some peop;e ride to the start so it's not fair to make them wait. If you come late we will go slow so you can catch us.
The ride has been delayed and changed to an afternoon ride. Please check back at 12:00 just to be sure there are no changes. Ride start location has also changed due to the wind direction.
NOTE: If it's too cold or windy in the morning I may change this to an afternoon ride. The ride location will change to the Sayville RR station. We will go to Bellport and have pizza. The mileage will be around 22-24 depending on the wind direction. Please check the calendar by 8am for any changes.
If you have any questions concerning this ride, call Mike at 516 448-8545.
sORRY GUYS, My head cold has got the best of me.Will wait for the next nice day.
CHECK BACK IN THE AM, AS i'M COMING DOWN WITH A COLD, MIGHT HAVE TO CANCEL
Temps should be favorable for this ride, but not the wind. It will be a moderate C+/B- ride to the Bean & Bagel in Calverton. The bike path is closed due to shotgun hunting season, so we'll stay on the road and do the best we can in the wind. Any changes no later than 8:30am.
Hill ride, not race. I will be riding at 70% effort as it's winter time. Please know the route or download it as it has been updated (note it's 2500 feet of climbing not 3000 feet).
This is the same route as last Wednesday. Because of the hills expect average pace of 17-18 mph.
Bring necessaries as we eat at the wait ups.
Changed to 43 mile ride. Includes Littlr Flower, 51 and 111.
We will be leaving Bank of America and head to Great River and East Islip for a 23 mile ride. The ride will be at a B- pace with an average speed of around 14.5 to 15mph and road speeds that will reach 16 to 18mph.
Changes or cancelation will be posted by 12:30pm day of ride.
If you have any questions concerning this ride, call Mike at 516 448-8545.
Due to the forecast precipation this ride venue has been changed to Brookhaven State Park. We'll head north from parking lot upto Rt 25A and then circle around going south upto Rt 25 where we'll take a vote! With 1-2" of snow we'll have a blast! But I'll pass on rolling over any logs (ask me why if you don't know! ;-).
CHECK back to this posting later Thursday night or before leaving for the ride (it might be cancelled due to rain).
Please leave extra time and DRIVE CAREFULLY ... remember Life Happens and Things Change.
Please be on time but if you're running late ... PULL OVER and call my cell below ... we'll wait but make you feel lousy about it ...
This ride maybe moved EARLIER to Thursday due to Friday morning forecast ... Check back to this posting after 6 pm Wednesday ... Sorry if it messes up your plans.
Time for the Rock Garden (again ;-) + I plan to do most of the other BDs including the Wild Turkey berm + the new section of #6. Depending on the group maybe we'll take a peek at More Wild Turkey though I expect to do the go-around.
So join aliens and Thunderbirds, as we head to Area 51 for another climb up Mount Alien. This will be the first ride on the new alternate Alien Short Course, which will throw a few new twists on the ride. So, pay attention when directions are given out, or you'll be lost in space, (or at least the Pine Barrens)!
We'll keep everyone together, except for the hill, which everyone does at their own pace. We regroup after the hill, so no one is left alone!
Please check back on this ride as I will cancel the ride if there is any ice on the roads. One brief stop and a few wait ups and we should beat the snow.
Join me for this ride from Bellport to Bohemia, where we will take our break at Cookie's Deli. Destinatin could change, depanding on which way the winds are blowing!
This will be a low paced C+ ride, which will average 12.2 - 12.6.
Time for the Rock Garden again + I plan to do most of the other BDs including the Wild Turkey berm + the new section of #6. I'm planning to skip BD5 in hopes there's energy left while we're on the Wild Turkey berm and maybe we'll try the More Wild Turkey drop off!
Overton has a number of diamonds that are do-able by Intermediate riders ... Got 6 Minutes, BD #1, #2 and #5. There are waitups and the BD's always loop back to the Blue main.

From Maple's lot we will ride to Bean and Bagel, than return to Maple's lot. Route, mileage, speed, etc. will depend on weather and road conditions. For information: contact Bill G. at 631-356-3036. Check ride calendar for changes, which would be posted by 08:00am day of ride.
We'll fly past abandoned government airfields, encounter rolling hills in the Pine Barrens, before a quick stop at the fueling station. Then we'll head to Area 51, where we'll have a close encounter with Mount Alien, before we engage the FTL drive on the Alien Superspeedway for the run home.
We will not be taking the bike path due to shotgun deer hunting season. we will ride from Vet's Park to McDonald's in Manorvile, and back. Late starting time will add a couple of degrees of warmth to our ride. Mileage and route will be wind dependent. Check the ride calendar the day of the ride for changes, which would be posted by 09:00am. For info: contact Bill G. at 631-356-3036.
NOTE: a DEC Parking & Access Permit is Required for this trail AND the forecast may result in a venue change ... so check back Saturday night!
Time for variation ... I haven't been in Commack since last month. This trail mostly a flat ride with a fun hill upto rail road ties on a wide berm and a nice a kettle hole (?) or sandpit where there is a significant climb out. Also, a really challenging tube with tight turns after each climb out of the trench. This ride will be slow as I really don't know the trail. Last month we missed the first three single BDs ... this time I plan to do them also.
We will be leaving East Islip BOA and head to the Great River area. Then we will make our way to the Babylon Dock area. Then off to Islip Beach before returning to the bank. Our break will be in Babylon or East Islip, the group will decide.
This is a B- ride with an average speed around 15 mph, road speeds may reach 16-19mph. Check the ride calender for any changes posted by 7:30am day of the ride.
NOTE: If it the wind direction changes by Sunday morning the route will change and the distance will change slightly making the ride easier and more enjoyable. The start time and the ride start location will remain the same.
This morning it might be nice to take a ride through Bellport and Patchogue stopping for a break at Mickey D’s around mile 20. The average pace will be between 14.0 to 15.0 mph depending on the roads, wind direction, and other conditions. Naturally, the road speed will be higher (15 -16.5 mph.) to produce the average. Ride to Pleasure Drive with a quick stop at McDonalds. At McDonalds we can decide on going up 51 and 111 or down Edwards. I posted the shorter route, 51 and 111 add about 4 miles.
Temps might be okay for a ride but always check back for any changes (which would be posted by 11 am) as they say chance of rain or snow shower. Park by RR tracks in lot south of Wendy's. We are never far away from Montauk Highway so could always turn around if too cold.
Something new for this year! Starting a little later because the trail is only 9 miles and some folks may have to take the LIE and Exit at 58. Refer to this map for the following info: https://climbonline.org/2014j/pdf/maps/HP-G8-Full-v26.pdf .
We park at the Trail Head of the big "P" lot and do the Yellow trail as a warmup ... it's flat! We'll do the Blue and Pink (Floyd) within the park ... a number of STEEP and short hills ... we'll head back over the first Blue section again but do the Black dashed trail and then head to the G8 South loop (not too interesting as it's on the powerline). When we return we'll head to the finish on the Orange Palooza.
Remember Life Happens and Things Change ... this posting might change so CHECK BACK Sunday night and before leaving for the ride.
Please leave extra time to be ready at the Start Time ... it's cold and uncomfortable waiting for a late comer!
If you're running late ... PULL OVER and call my cell below ... we'll wait but make you feel lousy about it ...
Ride includes some mileage on Dune Rd. into Quogue. Mileage and speed is weather dependent. For info: contact Bill G. at 631-356-3036. Check the ride calendar the dAY OF THE RIDE FOR CHANGES, WHICH WOULD BE POSTED BY 08:00am.

PLEASE check back to this posting Tuesday night and before leaving for the ride as Life Happens and Things Change ....
Regardless, it will be COLD! dress appropriately and bring hand/feet warmers if you have them.

No need to arrive 20 minutes early and get sweated in the car or freeze outside .... Please just be there in time to start at the posted Start Time.
CHANGING THE START TO NOON - Should be a little warmer (LOL) & about the same wind.
Join me for this easy C+ ride from Sayville - destination will be determined by the prevailing winds, and I will do my best to have the ride go in and out of the wind . We will have a bathroom stop and take a break somewhere.
I will not be on my road bike, so don't hesitate to bring a hybrid, if you have one.
This is a structured ride which will average 12.1 - 12.5, depending on wind, riders, etc.
NOTE: Park on the South Side of the train station, across the street.
The Executive Board Meeting will by held at Panera Bread in Bohemia at 6:30 pm.
All members are welcome to come. If a member has business they would like to discuss at the board meeting, please contact Jeff Meyer VP so the board can be preparded to address their topic of discussion. Any vote taken at a board meeting are by board members only.
