White Mountains Road Bike Week Review

Here is a quick draft on what we (Kevin, John, John and John, Robin, Bob and myself) did for a week in the White Mountains, NH.

All (not yet commented) Photos are now up here:

Stolen from John's Email report, with added GPS information and Photos (marked with #):

A bunch of us just returned from a week of riding in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Here's the ride report.

We stayed in Bartlett, NH - rented a condo in the woods with a pool. Rode about 300 miles in five days. Long climbs - several 5 mile continuous climbs at 8 - 10 %, a couple of 12 miles climbs, one up to 14% at one point. 7 riders. Had to cut the trip short a day because it rained heavy the whole day so we left on Friday and drove home. Percy touched a wheel one day about 20 miles from nowhere and went down. It made such a loud crashing sound that the propane truck that was passing at the time turned around and came back to offer assistance. He said he heard the crash. I actually suspect that he thought he hit one of us. He looked happy to see us all on our feet when he stopped to talk to us.

** Day one, Sunday - after arriving at about 3 PM, we rode from condo to N Conway via route 302 and 16 about 30 miles. Lots of traffic in N Conway. It really has become a tourist town since I've been there 30+ years ago. About 30 miles

** Day two, Monday - rode from condo up 302 over Crawford Notch - about a 12 mile climb at up to 13% grade. Most of the grade was less than 13 % but the climbing was essentially continuous for about 12 miles. Then we circled around Mt Washington in a large loop with some lesser climbs until we passed by Mt Washington and Wildcat Mt, where there was another long climb. Rode back on rt 16 to 302 and back to the condo. About 80 miles

    # Crawford Notch, around Mt Washington -- 2..4% climb with 10..15% steepening at end:

** Day three, Tuesday - rode from condo through Bartlett (one horse town) over Bear Notch (5 mile continuous climb at around 9 %) then down the Kankamangus Hwy and some nice back roads towards N Conway and back to condo. About 40 miles

    # Tue, Bear Notch Loop: -- 6% average climb on Bear Notch --

    # rained out afternoon, visited the "Grand Hotel on the foot of Mt Washington"

** Day four, Wednesday - we drove down to White Lake State Park north of Wolfeboro on Rt 16, left our cars there and rode through Wolfeboro, along the north side of Lake Winnepesauki on rt 109 and made a large loop around to the northwest and back to the start - Percy crashed and sustained some nasty road rash. About 70 miles

** Day five, Thursday - Rode from home over Bear Notch ( 5 mile climb), up the Kankamangus Trail ( about a 12 mile climb to top) then down to the town on Lincoln for a snack in the sun on the deck of the bagel place. Then up through Franconia Notch (another long climb partly on a 7 mile paved trail), then at 60 miles another quick stop for water before the last climb up the back of Crawford Notch ( long, but not as steep as the climb up the front side), then down the last 12 miles or so to the condo. As we approached and crossed Crawford Notch, the cold wind was howling and it looked like rain but we only encountered some heavy moisture from the clouds we were riding through at the top. The road was barely wet but it was cold. As usual, I being the slowest decender, I was off the back and arrived back at the condo a few minutes after the "peleton". About 80 miles.

    Top of Kancamagus Pass:

2nd Breakfast after 2nd climb done.

A great long bike (and hike) path up to Franconia Notch:

    # Kancamagus... not that that scratches healed magically by even today, but no big deal to ride with.

    # Fri, just John Y (BNL) and me (rained out day until 3..4p -- visited w . John the Cog Railway to Mt Washington -- , then short evening ride over Bear Notch down to the Covered Bridge and return in reverse over Bear Notch):

    # Sat, rained out morning ride :-(
