+ Tour of the Bronx +

    Sunday, 10/25/2015 - 7:30am
    Location:
    Randall's / Ward's Island
    Distance: 68 miles

    Details:

"The Tour" of the Bronx + extra miles before and after.
Here's a link to the full route:  http://ridewithgps.com/routes/10147053 (link is external)

We meet at 7:30am on Wards/Randalls Island in the main parking lot across from the McEnroe Sportime Tennis Center.  That allows two hours for a 16 mile "pre-Tour" ride. We'll take the pedestrian bridge to Manhattan, down the East River Bikeway, then across into Central Park for a few miles. From there it's over to the Hudson River Bikeway and up to the GW Bridge for photos at the Little Red Lighthouse. We'll cut across the Bronx and down the Harlem River Bikeway and over the Macombs Dam Bridge to the official Tour of the Bronx ride-start down the block from Yankee Stadium.

"The Tour" begins at 9:30 on the Grand Concourse around 161st St., and makes a very thorough loop through the borough before it ends at the Bronx Botanical Gardens.  From there we solo city street ourselves 6.5 miles through the South Bronx back to the cars. Don't expect that to be dull.

It's about 68 miles with about 2200 feet of climbing.

The Tour of the Bronx is sponsored by Transportation Alternatives. You’ll need to sign up for the 40 mile route and it sells out every year. I recommend going to the web site and submitting your email address to be notified when registration opens… which should be fairly soon.

These are RSVP rides. Contact me in advance, so I know at least one other person is interested. Otherwise, I may alter my plans for the day.

Generally, speaking this a big city cycling adventure. Heads-up. Look around.  Whenever possible, I'll be cruising in the 18 mph range.   This is a B+ ride.... not so much for the speed, but for the hills and general confident bike handling skills required. You’ll avoid potential dangers simply by maintaining a constant awareness of your surroundings. Contrary to what you might expect, most city drivers are very familiar and respectful to street cyclists.

The city is full of cyclists on regular road bikes with standard tires.  You'll be fine.  The roads are probably in better condition than you might imagine.

So. ... who's up for some adventure?
