Come out and join me for an early ride from Bellport to the Beach. We will make a quick bathroom stop at Wertheim, then a quick stop at 7-11 for any snacks or beverages on our way to the beach.
This is a C+ ride, which will average 12.5 - 13.0, depending on the wind and the riders, and there will be cue sheets.
We will leaving with the Kreb's group but riding a modified, shorter route. We will keep a steady paceline, cruising on flats, 18-20 with an average pace of 18 mph. We have a rest stop at McDonald's. It is a group ride and we will all stay together. Here is the ride https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30974941
This is the Kreb A- Ride (19-20 avg at ride end). As a nice start to the long holiday weekend, we will follow the newly-launched 50 mile route, which will keep us off of the dreaded “big roads.” ;-)
We do scheduled wait-ups (and as necessary), in addition to one brief rest stop at mile 28 (the gas station on Edwards Ave/Rte. 24, with mini-mart and restroom).
Please park your car in the Bellport Municipal Parking Lot located at Bellport Lane & Bell Street, and then ride bike half a block over to the Kreb Bike Shop parking lot at 10 Bell Street, to sign-in for ride and hear the pre-ride briefing.
Park in lot nearest Montauk highway. We will travel many back roads, turn around in Quogue and then stop at the Beach Bakery around mile 16. Check back for any changes which would be posted by 7 am.
A flat ride to places of historical interest around Smith's Point. The Manor of St George offers a breath taking view of Bellport Bay. We will visit the Beach at Smith's Point and then the William Floyd mansion. The original building at the Manor of St George was built before 1700. William Floyd was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and parts of the mansion were built in the very early eighteenth century. This will be a very moderately paced ride with no one left behind. Bring Snacks for breaks at the beach and at the William Floyd Mansion. The driveway to the Manor of St George is graveled in some sections so a hybrid bike is nice although I have biked the driveway on a skinny tired bike with no trouble.
Sorry all that were planning to do this ride, I need to cancel this due to a slight injury. I hope to repost this again soon.
Update to parking: Cedar Creek does not charge for parking Monday - Friday so that's where you'll find me! Look for me in parking field 1 or 2 after entering the park. If you don't see me right away, we'll all meet up at the entrance to the bike path as stated below.
I decreased the mileage on this post since I’m not sure if we’ll be able to get the entire ride in before the sunset...we’ll see how it goes...Please make sure to have lights on your bike.
I'm not sure when the park stops charging, so I'll update the post once I find out. Last time I checked there was a $10 parking fee, if you decide to park there, let's all meet by the memorial statue of Matt, the young bike rider located close to the bike trail entrance. An address to GPS is the Jones Beach Hotel located at 3275 Byron Street, Wantagh I've been informed this area has plenty of parking.
I'll be riding my hybrid so if you have one, feel free to take it out, if not, a road bike is perfect too. We'll be going from end to end, anticipate some wind off the water which may slow down our pace, as well as it being a shared bike path with other riders, runners and rollerbladers.
It's a beautiful ride on a summer evening so I hope you can join me.
