Smart Cycling Class
Smart Cycling is the current name for the LAB’s entry level course based on the concept of vehicular cycling.
Description: The Smart Cycling curriculum is designed to develop confidence and competence of a bicycle rider whatever their level of experience, knowledge or skill. Students will learn about different types of bikes, bike components, essential equipment, NYS traffic law, as well as how to safely and comfortably ride in various traffic conditions, terrain and climates.
The course would include four hours of classroom instruction and five hours of on-bike instruction.
The schedule would be:
6:00 - 9:00 pm Friday for the first 3 hours of classroom instruction, and;
9:00 am - 4:00 pm Saturday for the remaining one hour of classroom instruction and then the rest of the time would be on the bike. The on the bike portion includes a series of parking lot drills and a short road ride that is evaluated. There is also a 30 question written exam. Students are expected to bring a working bicycle and helmet.
The fee is $50.00 and would cover the Smart Cycling Manual, pizza Friday night, bagels Saturday morning, instruction, and road test and written exam scoring. Students who score 85% on the road and written exams can receive certificates and are able to continue on as candidates to attend an LCI Seminar and become LCI’s.
