Let's start accruing miles for the 2019-20 SBRA ride year, which starts today! Our break will be at Nettie's late in the ride. Weather is looking iffy right now but it's early. Always check back for any changes which would be posted by 7 am.
The wind will be blowing 25+ mph gusts tomorrow morning so this will not be a fast ride. If we have 3 or less riders the pace will probably be less than the advertized B. At least the return segment will feel good!
We'll head south and then west with a bagel break at Rocky Point Road. The Ride With GPS file is:
We do scheduled wait-ups (and as necessary), in addition to one brief rest stop at mile 15 (The Maples parking lot), followed by about 5 miles of double-pacelining before Yaphank. Please bring adequate water bottles and nutrition, as there are no food/water/restroom accommodations at the rest stop.
Please park your car in the Bellport Municipal Parking Lot located at Bellport Lane & Bell Street, and then ride bike half a block over to the Kreb Bike Shop parking lot at 10 Bell Street, to sign-in for ride and hear the pre-ride briefing.
Lots of folks avoid Glacier Ridge as it has a good deal of technical and hilly sections BUT there are also milder single track and fire road sections that many riders can handle when keeping the speed down. Come along and I will be more than willing to wait if you want to walk any section that you feel is above your pay grade! We will start the ride by entering the woods and then walking up a short single track and ride down to a bumpy fire road.
Lots of the trail is pretty wide and ticks will not be a problem unless you dive into the bush ... Also, I will have bug spray available before the ride.
For faster and more skilled riders there maybe a higher skilled ride leaving at 9 ... you will be out ahead of the group I lead as we will go at the slowest rider's pace. No one will be left behind in the woods!
Check back to this posting early Saturday morning ... as Life Happens and Things Change.
Old school BBB route from Mattituck to Greenport, then the grand tour of Shelter Island.
The North Fork and SI should be at peak fall foliage, and all of the pumpkin pickin' traffic will be gone.
Pace will be a moderate B/B+, the route out and back from Greenport is flat to rolling, and Shelter Island is rolling to hilly. Group will stay together and nobody gets dropped.
Lunch at the Sterlington Greenport Deli after we return on the ferry from SI. Round trip ferry fare is $6, also bring along plenty of snacks and water for the ride, as the lunch stop isn’t until around mile 45.
This ride will only go if it’s a beautiful fall day, any ride changes will be posted by 6am the morning of the ride.
When you don't suceed try try again. Hopefully this Saturday's Morning ride will work out better than Halloweenie's ride last Sunday that was rained out. Any cancellations will be posted by Saturday morning 7:30am.
CHANGED TO C+/B-(since Tricia already had a C+ posted)
Come out and join me for this ride from Bellport to the Beach. We will make a bathroom stop at Wertheim, then a quick stop at 7-11 for any snacks or beverages on our way to the beach.
This is now a C+/B- ride, which will average 12.8 - 13.5, depending on the wind and the riders, and there will be cue sheets. I am changing the route on the way back to Bellport and it should add about 4-5 miles, giving us 29-30.
Note: If the winds are very strong, the destination of the ride may change.
Kick-off the new SBRA cycling season, with the Thunderbirds! We'll launch from the South School for a rolling ride out to Briermere Farms, (stop at around 24 miles). Since the weather is predicted to be nice, we'll try to kick-off the season with 43 miles.
It's been a while...so this will be a tame B+/A- ride...cruising speed outside of hills and winds will be between 18-21mph.
We'll stop at Nettie's at mile 30. As we make a left onto 51 we'll regroup if necessary. Sprint on 111 if you'd like and we'll regroup as we turn onto Chapman.
starting 9:30 instead of 9. hoping it'll warm up a few more degrees
Park in the lot south of the RR station. Ride to Bellport for our break at the deli or down by the water. Looks sunny but chilly with light winds, let's hope! Check back for any changes which would be posted by 7 am.

We will go the usual route heading south (VERY SLOWLY) using the Connetquot Park bike bath. We’ll work our way down to Heckscher Park, do a loop where one can stretch the legs a bit if desired. We'll leave from the Blue Point Brewery and head towards Manorville. We'll take the typical turns that we make going to Smith Point out of Patchogue. Hopefully Bill will be back soon. We all seemed to enjoy a stress free B last week, so let's try it again. It will be a modified paceline, usual route, regular stop. Enjoy a different ride, if you want to push the pace.
We will be leaving Bank of America and head to Great River and East Islip for a 22 mile ride. The ride will be at a B- pace with an average speed of around 14.5 to 15mph and road speeds that will reach 16 to 18 mph.

If you're not a fast rider then come along anyway as there are also milder single track and fire road sections that many riders can handle when keeping the speed down. Come along and I will be more than willing to wait if you want to walk any section that you feel is above your pay grade!
Check back to this posting early Wednesday morning ... as Life Happens and Things Change.
This ride was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but changed to Wed. due to Tuesday's forecast of rain. Off to Wildwood, with a food stop at Bean and Bagel, or the deli just before the park. The Grumman trail will probably be covered by debris from last weeks wind, so we will be riding mostly on roads. For more info: contact Bill G. at 631-356-3036. Check the ride calendar the day of the ride for changes, which will be posted by 07:45am.

Skip the bar and come to Glacier Ridge for Happy Hour instead. Lights are required. If you don't have lights I have extras. First come first served for the lights. I entered ride as a B but will gauge the speed by the riders that show up. Nobody gets dropped and this is considered an introductory night ride. Night newbies are welcome. If you have questions please contact me by phone, email, or text. 631-882-9044. Please RSVP if you want to borrow a light.
The woods will not be as cold as the road with the wind chill factor but dress appropriately ... esp. your hands ... the rest of you will heat up quickly as you ride.
Cathedral Pines has a good deal of technical and hilly sections BUT there are also milder single track sections that many riders can handle when keeping the speed down. Come along and I will be more than willing to wait if you want to walk any section that you feel is above your pay grade!
Lots of the trail is pretty wide and ticks will not be a problem unless you dive into the bush ... Also, I will have bug spray available before the ride.
For faster and more skilled riders be there at 9 to ride with Steve ... you will be out ahead of the group I lead as we will go at the slowest rider's pace. No one will be left behind in the woods!

Ride from Calverton tp MRB and back (no 51, 111). when you read this please check what a A- ride is. Avearge speed is 19-20 mph. Those of you looking for a faster group ride are encouraged to loook at the Bagel Ride.
Let's do this old favorite around the Great River/East Islip area. If wind permits we will do a loop around Heckscher Park. Come on my C paced ride of 18-22 miles at 10.6-11.6mph. Newbies always welcome and nobody gets left behind. Any cancellation will be by 9:0am. Bring water and a snack as route will be determined at ride start due to wind, tide, position of moon and leaders disposition.
Come ride with us in the woods where you can enjoy the lovely autumn chill without the wind. This will be a novice to advanced beginner ride. We will do the main trail (which is only 2.5 miles) and the easiest diamonds including County Rd 83 N & S, Hunter & Ghost. I havent ridden these trails in a few years and have been advised that some of the trails were expanded so this will be a little exploratory.
Plan to feel about 10 degrees warmer in the woods than on the road (with no wind factor) so dress accordingly. This ride should not take more than 1.5 hours (maybe less?). Please bring plenty of fluids and snacks if you need them. there are no delis in the woods!
Rain will have to cancel (or snow!!) but wind will not deter us, HAHA! Check back by 9 am for any changes.
Scenic ride along the Peconic Bay, with viewing stops along the way. Deli stop in Cutchogue. Braun's is closed on Monday's, and Southold Seafood is to far since we are leaving from downtown Riverhead. If the group wants to do lunch, we can stop at an old iconic diner in Cutchogue. COME ON THIS 18-22 MILE RIDE AT A 10.6-11.6 PACE. Newbies always welcome and well taken care of. Bring water and a snack if we do not stop as direction depends on the wind direction, tide, position of moon and leaders disposition. Nobody gets left behind. Any cancellation will be by 9:00am. PARK ON SOUTH SIDE OF RR IN LOT ACROSS FROM SCHOOL.
Looks like balmy temps so want to try to get a short ride in. Park south of Wendy's near the RR tracks for a short meander around Center and East Moriches. Brief stop (bring a snack). Check back for any changes which would be posted by 10 am.
Big Change ... Hope you're not disappointed ... Steve may still be riding GR during the day ... contact me if you need info via my cell # below ...
It will be a 99% Full Moon before the rain comes on Tuesday! A nice evening in the woods which is forecast to be in the mid 50's. We'll adjust the ride for who ever shows and probably won't do the whole thing as the season is still early. The woods at night are a different experience ... some guys really fly regardless but I'd rather ride safe and watch for the green eyes of the deer.
Two sets of lights work best ... one for the handle bar and one for the helmet. If you don't have lights give Richard a call ... not sure if he's available to ride but he may have an extra set to lend you.
Check back to this posting some time Monday afternoon as Life Happens and Things change!
Cold windy day perfect for the woods. Manorville hills is a very easy trail technically. Nothing tricky or dangerous but a good workout. Bring your fat bike or mountain bike ,they all will be fine. It will be a social, friendly ride.
Of course you remember HUMP Day! but these humps are HILLS. Manorville is definitely not too technical but a lot of strength work ... if you start with me and you're stronger I will have no problem letting you go to catch up to John's group. I will go fast enough to finish just before the slowest rider.
It's tough to get lost in Manorville Hills as the trail is pretty well marked and there are intersecting fire roads ...
This will be a C+ ride from Sayville, that will include parts of Sayville, Bayport, Blue Point and Patchogue. We will have a bathroom stop and then take our break at a deli in Patchogue (early breakfast special available) and then loop back around Sayville to the ride start.
This is a structured ride which will average 12.2 - 12.8.
NOTE: Park on the South Side of the train station.
Time change to 10:00am from 09:15am to pick up a few degrees in temperture. Off to Briermere, with a brief stop to view the American Bison herd, if they are in a pasture near the road. If you want to share a pie, and their are enough riders interested, bring singles and change. Coffee, tea and bathrooms are available. Not interested in pie, try the pumpkin squares, or raising scones, etc. For info: contact Bill Gravitz at 631-356-3036. Check the ride calendar for changes, which would be posted by 07:30am, day of ride. Dress in layers, starting temp. will be cool. This would be a good time to see where you stored your cold weather clothing last spring.
New winter start location. We will start from the southwest corner of the Waverly Plaza parking lot by Blinds to Go and Pep Boys. The break will NOT be at the golf course. The break will be at the end of the ride at Panera Bread on Sundrise Hwy in Patchogue. In the winter I need soup.
The pace will be a B- until we hit the hills and then it will be whatever pace you can do. There will be a wait-ups at the end of the Bartlets. Cancelations or changes will be posted by 9:00 am.
Ride moving to Friday due to rain. Birthday Tacos are still a go today at 5.
We will be leaving Bank of America and head to Great River and East Islip for a 22 mile ride. The ride will be at a B- pace with an average speed of around 14.5 to 15mph and road speeds that will reach 16 to 18 mph.
Changes or cancelation will be posted by 2:00pm day of ride.
If you have any questions concerning this ride, call Mike at 516 448-8545.
This is the ride that was postponed from Sunday (11/10/19)....
The winds of change are bringing the colder weather, but let's see if we can find a route that avoids them. We'll head out to Briermere Farms for a break, before zig-zaging our way across the winds down to the South River Road and home.
This will be a moderate ride for Overton. We won't be doing the entire trail as this is only the second time since last year. We'll definitely skip the Rock Garden and Wild Turkey loop ... this time we'll include BD#4 (Wish You Were Here). I heard there's an extension on BD#4 which we might try or look at ... if it's work then we'll skip the mild but working BD#5.
If you're a Begineer or Intermediate rider then come along anyway ... CLIMB designed Overton with a main loop with the Black Diamonds as loops off the Main (Blue) trail ... you can always do a wait up.
The trail is pretty wide and ticks will not be a problem unless you dive into the bush ... Also, I will have bug spray available before the ride if you ask for it. Hopefully the Rt112 metal crusher and Mill Rd. compost machines will be quite ;-).
Check back to this posting early Saturday morning ... as Life Happens and Things Change.
Sorry I have to cancel I’m sick with sinus infection Maybe try going on your own a lot of newbies were planning to show up
Saturday is predicted to be brrrrr..cold so join us for a much warmer ride in the woods. This is a beginner trail, perfect for those with little experience or wishing to hone their skills. Thiis ride will be designed for novice to advanced beginner riders and this is a much easier trail than was Glacier Ridge. We will stick to main trail unless there are some easy diamonds at which case each can decide with wait ups. Remember there is little or no wind in the woods so real feel is much warmer than the parking lot.
NYS DEC permits are required. They are FREE but you must go online to complete application (Climbonline.org has a link) and print 2 copies; one to carry and one for your dashboard. Permits are good for 3 years!
Check back morning of for any changes and call my cell if you have any questions. I hope to see all of you from last week and more!Bring plenty of water (camelbacks are best for woods so you can drink and ride) and snacks if you need.
Easy endurance A- pace. Pulls at around 200W, no more. It'll be chilly so only one brief restroom break at mile 22. This will be a steady paced ride, no surging or sprints. If you want to ride hard, this is the wrong ride for you.
It's been fun, but this will probably be the end of my substitute chores for Bobby who should be home soon. Hopefully he will remember where he and Chris used to live.
You know the routine, nothing has changed excepts it's getting colder.
Hope to see you Sunday and that the weather cooperates.
We will be leaving Bank of American in East Islip heading to Great River and East Islip area. Then we will head to Islip Beach. Please bring your snacks and drinks for this ride. Any questions call Mike at 516 448-8545
This is a B- ride with an average speed of 14.5 to 15 mph, road speeds may reach 17-18 mph. Check the ride calender for any changes posted by 8:00am day of ride.
Endurance paced ride. Minimal Stops, one quick nature break, bring two water bottles if needed. My Pulls will be at less than 225W on the flats, and less than 3W/kg on the climbs. If you want to go harder than that, then this is the wrong ride for you. Route shown below.
Yes, B-. Hopefully the Grand Master of the TBC will be returning. So for those that haven't been able to ride for one reason or another, this will be an opportunity to get back into regular ride mode. I'll post a few B- rides before Bill increases the pace up to winter maintenance level.
Sorry, cancelled as I can't wait for it to stop at 11.
Check back later as this maybe a washout.
BSP has a good single track for Begineers and Intermediate riders but will not bore most Advance riders. With the strong winds we have had there may be some clearing work to be done as we ride. First time here this season so we'll not be pushing the pace and do waitups at the fire road crossings. No one gets left behind in the woods!
We'll head north from the parking lot entrance and swing around to the south upto Rt25.
No need to arrive 20 minutes early and cook in the car or freeze outside ... Please just be ready to ride at the posted start time! Running late? Call my cell # below and we'll wait a bit.
Check back to this posting a Life Happens and Things Change!

Join me for this ride from the Sunshine Mall to the Beach. We will make a bathroom stop at Wertheim, then a quick stop at 7-11 for any snacks or beverages on our way to the beach.
This is a C+ ride, which will average 12.5 - 13.0, depending on the wind and the riders.
Off to Cutchogue, with some scenic Peconic Bay stops on the way. We will stop at Braun's Sea food for their wonderful chowders or Lunch. Please note that eating at Braun's means that this bike trip will take extra time, so plan your day accordingly. If you don't eat seafood, other dishes, or burgers are available. This is the Kreb A- Ride (19-20 avg at ride end). This week, thanks to Chris Joinnides, we have the newly-launched North Route 42 miler, which heads up to Shoreham and Wading River:
We do scheduled wait-ups (and as necessary), in addition to one brief rest stop at approx. the 21-mile mark in Wading River (parking lot across from the pond/Zophar Mills...no restroom or services). Please bring adequate drinks & nutrition for entire ride.
Park your car in the Bellport Municipal Parking Lot located at Bellport Lane & Bell Street, and then ride bike half a block over to the Kreb Bike Shop parking lot at 10 Bell Street, to sign-in for ride and hear the pre-ride briefing.
This is the usual Bartlet ride with a change in start location. We will meet at the southwest corner of the lot in front of Blinds to Go. There will not be a food break at the golf course, instead there will be an optional soup/food break at Panera's after the ride. As usual everyone will do the Bartlets at there own pace and we will have waitups at the end.

Leaving Oakdale RR we will be heading to Bellport. Our food stop will be at the Bellport Deli. Depending on the weather & route this ride may be a few miles more or less than posted.
This is a B- ride with an average speed of 14.5 to 15 mph, road speeds may reach 17-18mph. Check the ride calender for any changes posted by 7:00am day of ride. Any questions call Mike at 516 448-8545
Nettie's has soups&rolls, and a variety of baked goods. Indoor seating both with a fireplace, and without, and outdoor seating. Bathrooms are available. The soups were hearty when I was there last week, and the glazed pumpkin spice donuts were unbelieveable. For info: contact Bill G. at 631-356-3036. Strong winds could reduce the ride by a few miles. Check the ride calendar the day of the ride for changes, which would be posted by 07:45am.
Park in overflow lot south of the main lot. We'll ride to Bellport for our break. If it looks like rain in the afternoon, this ride maybe changed to a C so others can join us who might have been doing Tom's afternoon ride. Check back for any changes which would be posted no later than 7 am.
Easy endurance A- pace. Pulls at around 200W or 3W/kg on the climbs, no more. It'll be chilly so this will be a Non-Stop ride with only one brief restroom break. This will be a steady paced ride, no surging or sprints. If you want to ride hard, this is the wrong ride for you, I encourage you to step up to Jeremy's A+...
Join me for this easy and almost completely flat ride from Riverhead to Mattituck, where we will take a break at the Deli on Love Lane. We will return through Jamesport, up and around Riverhead, and end up at the start. There will be cue sheets.
The average pace will be 12.9 - 13.6, or so, depending on the weather and those in the group.
This will be a fun and fast 50 mile ride out of Calverton, like the ol' school Jim Drago Saturday rides. It will average somehwere between 21-22 mph depending on the size and makeup of the group. We will have a wait up at the top of Little Flower and a quick stop at the SBRA favorite Gas Station (at mile 30 or so).
PLEASE CHECK BACK SATURDAY MORNING at 8am for change, cancellation due to weather.
Hope to see you there!
Here is the route, please make sure to download it to your bike computer so you will know the turns:

Any changes/cancellation due to rain will be made by 7:30am the day of the ride.
So...Let's shuffle off to Nettie's bakery....the long way...
Update – 11/23/19 – 8:30pm. I’m sorry to say but it looks like rain Sunday.Regrettable I have to cancel and try again next Sunday.
Chris and I are back. I would like to thank Bernie for doing this ride for me while I was gone. I hope my legs still work. Don’t worry, you won’t have to pull; I have that covered, I think. If you have nothing to do today we would love to see you. The ride will be the usual BOA/River ride. Let’s hope the weather is good!
Today's’ route to Great River will change up a bit towards the end of the ride, if the wind is in our favor; making this route pretty flat except for 2 overpasses. We will go the usual route heading south using the Connetquot Park bike bath. We’ll work our way down to Heckscher Park, do a loop where one can stretch the legs a bit if desired.
The average pace for this ride will be between 14.5 & 15.0 +/- mph, or what conditions allow. The road speed will be between 15 and 17.0 mph, or slower if needed for safety concerns.
Please DO NOT PARK in the Meat Farms parking lot. Use the west side of the bank if the east side is full. Thanks!
We’ll be making a rest stop around mile 19 at the deli/bakery. The route back will be determined by the wind direction. Good Stuff after the Ride. Not sure what good stuff; it's always a surprise.
Any cancellations due to unforeseeable circumstances, or weather related problems will be posted by 7:30am. If you have any questions about this ride, or the start location, please call or text my cell, 631-484-3490.

Bring water and a snack as route will be determined at ride start due to wind, tide, position of moon and leaders disposition.
This will be a nice ride around the Holbrook area. The average pace for this ride will be between 14.0 & 15.0 mph; naturally the road speed will be higher to produce the average. We can all go for coffee and a bagel at the end of the ride and chat if you want. If the route changes a bit we could stop at Mickey D's. We'll see, group decides.

Join me for this C ride around parts of Stony Brook and St. James. The ride will average 11.5 - 11.9 and we will stop for a break at St. James Bagels (food and bathroom available).
Another kind of T-Bird ride, this time...we'll ride together and be friendly. Since it's predicted to be windy, we'll zig-zag around Manorville, hitting some rolling terrain (including Mill Road), and try to avoid the wind. The plan is to head out into the Pine Barrens, taking advantage of the shelter from the wind. Who knows, we may even see some of the local wild turkeys, celebrating that they made it through Thanksgiving! Turkey vultures are welcome, too, as long as they keep their talons in control.
We'll do some pacelining and some rolling hiills, but the plan is to ride as a group - it's a holiday. We'll take a quick break at the old gas station stop at around 19.6 miles, but that's it... So you'll be home with plenty of time to baste the turkey and listen to the full version of Alice's Restaurant.
Endurance paced ride. Minimal Stops, one quick nature break, bring two water bottles if needed. My Pulls will be at less than 225W on the flats, and less than 3W/kg on the climbs. If you want to go harder than that, or if you want to go charging up ahead on every hill, then this is the wrong ride for you, and I encourage you to do the George R's Bagel Ride at 8am. Route shown below.
This is the Kreb A- Ride (finish avg. is 19-20; cruising at 23mph or under). This week, we’ll do the extended 41 mile route (East route plus an 8 mile Mill Rd loop tacked on after The Maples rest stop).
We do scheduled wait-ups (and as necessary), in addition to one brief rest stop at roughly the 15 mile mark. Please bring adequate drinks and nutrition, as the rest stop occurs in a parking lot (no food/drinks/restrooms available).
Please park your car in the Bellport Municipal Parking Lot located at Bellport Lane & Bell Street, and then ride bike half a block over to the Kreb Bike Shop parking lot at 10 Bell Street, to sign-in for ride and hear the pre-ride briefing.
Come out and stretch your legs after eating the Turkey, side dishes, and pie(s) on Thanksgiving!
This will be a C+ ride from Sayville to Bellport, East islip, Ronkonkoma, ?? - direction will depend on the prevailing winds, etc. There will be a break & bathroom stop wherever we go.
This is a structured ride which will average 12.5 - 13.0.
NOTE: Park on the South Side of the train station.
The weekend is best for this place as getting there is not a bad commute. First time this year so it may seem like a little exploring.
We'll limit the BDs but include the long half pipe and the climb up to and along the old RR tracks. Will try to save enough energy to do #13 loop. The pace will be slow but the technical aspect of riding planned for this venue is Intermediate to Advanced.
This morning it might be nice to take a ride through Bellport and Patchogue stopping for a break at Mickey D’s around mile 20. The average pace will be between 14.0 to 15.0 mph. Since I just returned from an 81 day vacation; the average will probably come in at the lower end. Naturally, this will depend on the weather, wind direction and the road conditions. Depending on the wind, and the route back we might be +/- a mile.
This is a funny time of the year, with unpredictable weather and winds; I will try to pick roads that work out best for the current day’s condition. Be prepared for route changes at the last minute which will be beneficial for you, and the ride. With that being said please check the ride calendar for any weather, or last minute cancellations which will be posted no later than 8:00am if necessary. My cell phone number is 631-484-3490; call or text anytime if you have questions about this ride.
Still fighting this sinus infection, but hope to be a-ok by Saturday.
so come out and join us for a beautiful ride in the woods. Don't let the cold weather hold you back as it is always about 10 degrees warmer in the woods, with the trees blocking the wind. Calverton is rated a beginner-intermediate trail so i encourage Novice and advanced beginners to come out and enjoy another sport perfect for keeping you in shape through the winter. Please bring a snack and plenty of water (camelbacks are best so you can drink as you ride). You will typically work up more body heat than same level road ride.
Newbies: plan to pump your tires between 28-33 lbs.
DEC permits required; be sure to have 2 copies, one to keep on you and one for your dashboard.
Endurance paced ride. Minimal Stops, one quick nature break, bring two water bottles if needed. My Pulls will be at less than 225W on the flats, and less than 3W/kg on the climbs.
