will take place after ~8 miles of hills ... We'll first do 6 miles on the PJ-Setauket Bike Path followed by mostly flat runs through Mt. Sinai & Miller Place and work on pacelining. You'll be amazed how fast the flat and rolling stuff goes after the hills. MY thoughts for successful pacelining (I'm sure others can add to this):
1. try not to do anything unexpected and call out/indicate hazards;
2. when moving up to the front position maintain the SAME speed and accelerate slowly if desired;
3. look BACK before pulling off the front; signal intent with one elbow while dropping off to the other side;
4. consider who's wheel your following and adjust your distance appropriately; try not to cross the rear wheel of the rider ahead;
5. eat/drink while in the last position;
6. call out traffic approaching from the rear when in the last position;
7. DON'T pull until you HAVE to get off (take another pull later); Plan ahead and don't get off the front at the bottom of a hill;
8. if you're tired and feel it might be unsafe then hang off the back.
We're off to Shoreham with a stop at the Bagel Café (aka Bagel Lady) for a rest/snack stop. Leader will maintain a 13-15 mph cruising speed. No one will be dropped.

Come on out to Riverhead for the 33 mile ride to Wading River and back, with plenty of varied terrain and hills (Route 51, Route 111, Little Flower, Baiting Hollow) and some nice, quiet roads, too. We re-group after the major hills, with a brief rest after the Little Flower hill.

Skirt the north shore hills without taking them. Long flat stretches east on 347 and south on Rocky Point Rd. Break at McD's in Miller Place and return.
Last week this ride was done spiritedly but together...I would like to keep it that way, so plan on a pace line .the phone listed is my home. It there is rain I will let everyone know by 7
I will be home from work a little earlier. B- ride, but will ride the average pace of our group.. no one dropped and will stop if needed. Any questions regarding this ride call my cell.
Leisurely ride from Abraham Lincoln School (off West 15th Street, Deer Park) to the Town of Babylon Docks. Bring a snack/drinks and bug spray just in case...
Any cancellations/changes will be made prior to 3pm the day of the ride.
Feel free to call 631-793-8298 for any questions regarding this ride.
We are going to turn the route upside down and backwards. Looking forward to this revised route, you should be too!!! We will regroup as required at the top of all climbs, group will remain together throughout the ride. Short stop at the Wading River Deli and then back home.
Refreshments / Coffee stop at Jamesport Duffys Deli, brief stop/reassembly as needed at IPBP and other key locations. [/][/b]
Looking for a good base level A (but up to A+, AA at times) pace. No one getting dropped.
In general I want to see this smooth super efficient team effort to optimize time!!! Smooth but fast in general. Little playing allowed at the few dedicated hilly sections (you will find out). Reassembly after that -- always, no worries.
** Come for a training ride -- "as fast as you are working with me" **
I classified it back down to A all-over -- but we will go some sections at A+..AA pace for sure (if you go and work with me) -- A and good B+ riders are always welcome, may form a trailing group, if any? -- learn how to work as a team!! -- we will have some wait ups (on top of the 1st lil hill if needed) but we will not wait on every turn -- as I also classified it as TEAM, what means exactly this -- stay all together as much as possible and help each other for most efficiency and best pace w/o dropping any one -- regardless, unless on riders request or extreme mismatch.... -- you better be able sit in easy at 19..21mph and try to handle a few faster sections (slow down afterwards for reassembly) -- have fun!
Rocky Point 2 Iron Peer Beach Park for quick snack watching the sound and reassembly, Coffee/Refreshments now in Jamesport Duffys Deli. Watch for weather related updates or delays -- will post any change or cancellations by very latest start time -1 hour at the day of ride, if unsure, contact me. Let's Go Flying. Starts promptly as indicated on top at Tildas Bake Shop, typical moving time 2h45..3h depending on you. Starts out with some rollers on North Country Rd to warm up, will go fast, but will do the best to reassemble group after 1st climb(s) and as needed, group stays together as a Team AND SHARES THE WIND if any and has fun like few flying birds! Read here for past ride logs, stories, photos and details: http://pyzahl.blogspot.com/search?q=RP2IPBP
However, this is a team style training ride, lean and execute team play, work together not to show off -- with exception of a few designated sections to play... with following regrouping.
Out to Manorville and back. We will take the longer route out and loop around the golf course before taking a break in Manorville. Pace will be low B/B+ averaging 16.7-16.8. Paceline on certain stretches for those who want to join in. This is not a B/B+ ride that will come in at 18mph, so please note that this is a lower end B/B+ ride.
some introduction into Pace Line Training will take place after ~8 miles of bike path hills ... We'll first do 6 miles on the PJ-Setauket Bike Path followed by mostly flat runs through Mt. Sinai & Miller Place and work on pace lining. You'll be amazed how fast the flat and rolling stuff goes after the hills. MY thoughts for successful pace lining (I'm sure others can add to this):
1. no matter where you are in the line: try not to do anything unexpected and call out/indicate hazards;
2. when taking over the front position maintain the SAME speed and accelerate slowly if desired;
3. look BACK before pulling off the front; signal intent with one elbow while dropping off to the other side;
4. consider who's wheel your following and adjust your distance appropriately; try not to cross the rear wheel of the rider ahead;
5. eat/drink while in the last position;
6. when in the last position, call out traffic approaching from the rear;
7. DON'T pull until you HAVE to get off (save your energy and take another pull later); Plan ahead and don't get off the front at the bottom of a hill;
8. if you're tired and feel it might be unsafe then hang off the back.
Join me for a B+ ride. We will do the 50 mile version of Marty's ride. I want to try keep a pace line with the cursing speed about 20 MPH and to try to keep the group together. Those who want to go off the front are welcome. ***NO GO IN RAIN***
I tend to be long winded so click "read more" on the bottom for the entire post. – How about taking a ride to Ridge for a change? It's a nice route with a little something for everyone. I've checked the problem roads and they have been repaved!
The average pace for the ride will be between 14.5 and 15mph. depending on wind conditions, and other factors such as humidity and squirrels. Naturally the road speed will be slightly higher to produce the average. Around mile 18 or so we’ll make a pit stop; you can go to Mickey D’s or the deli.
There will be a few long spots where one can stretch the legs if desired; working off any extra calories collected at the rest stop. This is not a pace line.
My cell number is 631.484.3490; call anytime if you have questions about this ride or need directions to the start. Please check the ride calendar for any weather, or last minute cancellations which will be posted no later than 7:30AM if necessary
Leave the Manorville King Kullen for a spin out to Mattituck, with a stop at a deli in Mattituck. Mimsie the Cat says it will be a medium-speed pace and it will be a paceline ride... Let's plan on riding together as a group.
Park on south side across from station. Plan on 24-28 miles depending on wind and tide. Average pace 11-12.5MPH. NOBODY LEFT BEHIND. Newbies always taken care of. Any cancellation by 8:30AM. Deli stop at Bellport to pick up snacks to eat at the Dock. Either get out and ride or stay home and get FAT!
p.s. Irene, where the hell are you?
So what's the best part of this ride for you, bicycling in beautiful Orient along the Main Road, riding through Orient's quaint little town, pedaling with spectacular water views and wildlife, being awestruck while in the Orient Point State Park or dining at the Orient by-the-Sea Restaurant and Marina?
End of summer Century! 7:30am prompt start from Tildas. This is RP2IPBP out to Orient Point totaling just over the century mark (102mi total). This is a B+ no drop ride and the plan is to stay together. There will be wait-ups and a couple of rests including a deli/food/lunch stop in Greenport Village. So take a few extra bucks. Expect 102 miles, reasonable total time should be about 6 hours so prepare(ie. hydration/food). Any questions, feel free to contact me anytime.

Join me for a ride to Smiths Point Beach. This is a flat ride with an average between 16.6-16.8 mpg so this is considered to be a higher than a B and a lower end B+. This is the pace I have been doing most of the summer. There will be sections where we will pace line and as usual if you do not want to participate you do not have to. This is a scenic ride for a great holiday weekend. Look for my car across from Flo's at end of the parking lot.
Easy end of summer ride to the beach, try to average 15 mph. No one gets dropped. I promise there will be a short warm up period for the weak, old and cranky riders. Short bathroom break at the beach with a break at The Hampton Coffee shop in Westhampton
Park on the east end of the parking lot, nearest to Wendy's. Exact route still TBD but there will be a food/rest stop at Briermere around mile 20. Exact mileage may be slightly less than 45. Expect a strong B pace ( over 15.0 ) but not outside of the B range. Cancellation for any reason will be posted no later than 7AM.
I tend to be long winded so click "read more" on the bottom for the entire post. – The route will be the same as the Sunday before last. We’ll go the through Connetquot Park, then down to Heckscher Park where one can stretch the legs a bit by doing one loop. This is not a pace line. Around mile 14 there will be a rest stop and a bathroom break. This route is mostly flat with shade and 4 little hills. This ride will come in with an average between 14.8 & 15.0 mph; depending on the wind it could come in a tad higher. The road speed on this ride will be between 15 and 17mph.
We’ll be making a food/rest stop near the end of the ride around mile 30. While at this stop you can have self serve ice-cream, fat free yogurt, gelato, or a sandwich and coffee before going just 2 more miles back to the start. Back at the start if you bring supplies and a chair (optional) we can have a repair clinic; or not.
Please check the ride calendar for any weather, or last minute cancellations which will be posted no later than 7:30AM if necessary. My cell number is 631.484.3490; call anytime if you have questions about this ride or need directions to the start.
Join us as we explore the coves, inlets, and bays, surrounding Shelter Island and Sag Harbor. There are many waterside views and scenic vistas on this hilly and lightly traveled route. We will take the North ferry and ride the West perimeter of the island to the South ferry. On the South fork we will have lunch in Sag Harbor, then ride through the Northwest woods and Three Mile Harbor. Ferry back to Shelter Island and ride the East perimeter along Gardiners Bay including the causeways leading to the Ram islands. Joint with NYCC. Keep in mind there will be ups and downs all day. If you don't like hills this ride is not for you. Total round trip fare for both ferries including your bike is $11.00 cash per person.
Going to East Islip with a stop at Timber Point Golf Club for a snack. NOBODY LEFT BEHIND. Special care taken for newbies. Any cancellation by 8:30AM. Average pace should be 11-12.5MPH.
Bring money for great rest stop, Average speed will depend on who shows up and the Wind, somewhere between 12.3 and 13.5, I hope? New route. No One Left Behind.
Park near Wendys off Old Next Road. Rollers on Mill Road done at your own pace. We will then go up to the Bean and Bagel for our break. Pace will hopefully reach low B- (no more than 13.4). Check back here for any cancellation by 7:30 am. Cell phone 516-330-1542.
A tour of the area for those who want to sleep late. There is no food stop, but will make bathroom stops if needed. No one left behind. check back by 12:00 pm for any changes.
